Well what better way to start off the day than with a breakfast of champions. Apollo Bay is very much a small fishing and surfing community. It has that small town feel. We walked up the strip from our hotel just across the street from the beaches looking for brekky. After much contemplation, we settled on this particular cafe because I could get something that didn’t have an egg in it. There’s something about the eggs here in Oz that are just a tad too rich for me to eat on a daily basis. And breakfast in Oz is usually something with an egg, a couple rashers of bacon and a coffee. It doesn’t get much more exciting than that. Except today!! Check out Brian’s pancake, maple syrup and butter soup. Mmmmm!!

Nothing like a healthy brekky!

We didn’t rush out of bed too quickly today. But today is checkout day from Melbourne and then off to Apollo Bay via the Great Ocean Road. We headed towards the QV Market to see if maybe the sausage guy was there even though we knew the market was closed today (it’s closed Mondays and Wednesdays). Unfortunately closed means everything is closed! Oh well. So we headed in the direction of the car rental place and to find some brekky.

Who put the turn signal on the right???

Today is our last day in Melbourne and we have to try and squeeze in everything we possibly can! first things first, we’re off to the Queen Victoria Market to collect the last of our souvenirs since the market is closed on Monday’s. Amongst some of the chotchkies was a shirt that I wanted to get for myself. Of course like any flea market type place, most of the vendors don’t return to the same spots each time. So we were scanning up and down the aisles for this particular vendor with the shirts. I finally spotted it, bought my shirt and noticed that Brian had wandered off. Oy vey!

Sorry we’ve been out of touch for the past 3 days driving down the Great Ocean Road. We are connected again and will be catching up on our adventures shortly. We have been in the following towns: Apollo Bay, Port Fairy (jokes begin here), Robe and now Rowland Flat (Barossa Valley wine region). Note: all of our posts are time corrected to the correct day. So if you see “Posted on September 7th” that’s because I’m adjusting the time to coincide with the day that the post is talking about. No you’re not imagining things!
Oh yeah and we’re only sharing a small subset of the pictures we’re taking. All of our photos will get posted to our gallery when we return. So check back after the 18th for ALL of the photos and movies!
More to come!

Today we started our day rather slowly. We ordered breakfast via roomservice and watched several episodes of Project Runway Australia.
(It’s just not the same without Heidi and Tim). hehehe. We headed out on the City Circle tram (which is free) to see more of the city.

On the tram

I figured I’d start with today (Friday) night and work backward. One of the products of this great nation is Bundaberg Rum. To quote our rainforest tour guide from last year, “It’s like mother’s milk!!” (which I suppose is a good thing in some bizarre sense). .

We arrived at our hotel just after noon after a rather interesting ride with a particularly fiesty Aussie. We got to hear a few tidbits about the city and also a few stories about other “Yanks” he has met while driving for Suncoast. Anyway, the hotel seemed nice from the lobby but we were too early to check in. Read more »

So we’re exhausted but safely in Melbourne! I’m starting to remember why I love this country. So we’re on the plane and the plane stopped on the taxi way because the gate was full and we were early. So passengers started to get up to use the restroom after awhile and no one flipped out. I suppose the difference is one of policy as a result of litigious Americans always wanting to sue someone else for their own stupidity.
Our bus driver was a character right off the bat. He was quick to poke fun at us Yankees.
Off to our hotel!

We’ve made it to New Zealand! The land of kiwi and awesome lamb. Mmmmmm! After a soothing baby wipe bath, refresh of deoderant and a change of shirt (for me anyway, Brian is still roughing it in the same shirt) we will depart for Melbourne in two hours. Weeeee!
